Indianapolis, July 28, 2025 – A 55-year-old man from Denton, Texas, has been sentenced to 2½ years in prison after pleading guilty to stalking and harassing WNBA superstar Caitlin Clark in a disturbing case that spanned multiple months and caused widespread concern for the athlete’s safety.

Man Pleads Guilty in Indianapolis Court

Michael Lewis, the defendant, admitted guilt to one count of felony stalking and a misdemeanor charge of harassment under a plea agreement with Marion County prosecutors. His sentence includes credit for time already served since his arrest in January, reducing his total time remaining behind bars to approximately 18 months.

The plea deal also imposes strict conditions:

  • No contact of any kind with Caitlin Clark.

  • No attendance at Indiana Fever or Indiana Pacers games.

  • No access to internet-connected devices during his sentence.

  • Mandatory mental health evaluation and treatment.

Harassment Campaign Spanned Weeks

Between December 2024 and January 2025, Lewis sent hundreds of disturbing, sexually explicit, and threatening messages to Clark via social media platform X (formerly Twitter). He also traveled from Texas to Indiana to stalk her in person, staying at a hotel in downtown Indianapolis and even using a public library computer to continue the harassment.

In several of the posts, Lewis falsely claimed to be in a relationship with Clark and described driving past her home multiple times per day. He also made clear his intention to attend her games under false identities, which raised the alarm for both Clark’s team and the authorities.

Courtroom Behavior Raises Concerns

During the sentencing hearing, Lewis exhibited erratic and concerning behavior, including chewing on his earphones, delivering incoherent speeches about religious visions, and repeatedly denying that he had committed any crime—even while accepting the plea deal. The presiding judge reminded him that a guilty plea required an acknowledgment of responsibility.

Authorities noted that Lewis had previously been visited by police for a welfare check but continued his actions regardless. Investigators ultimately tracked him using his hotel’s IP address and surveillance footage, which confirmed his attempts to approach Clark’s location.

Caitlin Clark’s Response and Safety

Clark, one of the most prominent young stars in women’s basketball, was deeply shaken by the stalking and altered her public appearances and routines to ensure her safety. The 23-year-old is the first overall pick in the 2024 WNBA Draft and has quickly become a national figure both on and off the court.

Marion County Prosecutor Ryan Mears commented on the case:

“This resolution ensures that the defendant is held accountable for his threatening actions, the fear he instilled, and the disruption he caused. There is a young person here who has been profoundly impacted.”

Clark has not made a direct public statement regarding the sentencing but is said to be continuing her season with the Indiana Fever under increased security precautions.
