Late-night talk show legend Jimmy Kimmel has had some choice words about CBS’s decision to cancel The Late Show with Stephen Colbert. Yesterday, CBS made the shock announcement that it was canceling The Late Show franchise following the conclusion of Colbert’s eleventh season, with the final episode set to air May 16, 2026.
The late-night talk show has become something of an institution on US television during its 32-year run, and was previously presented by late-night TV heavyweight, David Letterman. He presented the show until 2015, when Colbert took over, and will now end after his 11th season.
In an Instagram story on his official account, Kimmel replied to Colbert’s Instagram reel on his stories, where he declared his love and support for Colbert, before taking aim at CBS… and their Big Bang Theory franchise shows. Check out Kimmel’s image below:

What This Means For The Future Of Late Night TV
This Is Not A Good Sign For The Future Of Late Night

The Late Show being canceled is another blow to the future of US late-night TV, and looks as though it could be followed by Jon Stewart’s The Daily Show‘s potential cancelation. Things are not looking too promising for the future of talk shows, as their ratings and impact on popular culture continue to wane.
Kimmel, in true fashion, managed to support his contemporary, while also making a joke at the network’s expense. In fact, Kimmel and his show Jimmy Kimmel Live! remain a bastion of longevity as America finds itself in the last days of late-night TV talk shows, with the growth of podcasting, and perceived lack of cultural interest.
Our Take On The End Of The Late Show With Stephen Colbert
The Show Is A Big Loss, But Colbert Will Likely Be Back

There is no doubt that The Late Show will be a big loss to late-night TV, but it could also trigger the shakeup and reinvention that late-night talk shows will need if they are to endure. With the world of entertainment ever-evolving, there doesn’t seem to be as much of a market for talk shows as there once was, which means an industry pivot is needed.
Colbert’s previous projects show that he has a track record of strong work, and is well-respected in the business, so he should have no problems bouncing back with his next project. It’s just a shame that he wasn’t given the chance to guide The Late Show through this tumultuous time and on to better things.
