Supplies needed

  • Hair elastics
  • Patriotic ribbon (seasonal ribbon mix works great)
  • Scissors
  • Optional: Fray Check or a lighter (to seal ribbon edges)

Step by Step Instructions

1. Choose your favorite red, white, and blue ribbons. A ribbon mix with different patterns adds fun variety! You’ll also need basic hair elastics.
2. Cut each ribbon into strips about 8 inches long. Don’t worry about making them all the exact same size — a little variation looks cute!
3. Trim the ends of the ribbons in a cute shape (like diagonal or V-cuts). Use Fray Check or lightly singe the ends with a lighter to prevent fraying.
4. Take one ribbon strip and tie it in a simple knot around the hair elastic. Repeat with more strips until the bow looks full and fluffy.

Crafts To Dress Up Your Patriotic Attire 4.1

Transform a plain hair clip into a patriotic barrette using beads, wire, and a little creativity. Mix and match beads with stripes, stars, or glitter to create a unique piece that matches your outfit. These also make great party favors!

Supplies needed

  • Red, White, and blue pony beads
  • 1 chenille stem (pipe cleaner)
  • An old barrette, or a new barrette clip
  • Hot glue gun, or needle and thread

Step by Step Instructions

  1. Thread enough pony beads onto a pipe cleaner (chenille stem) so that it will cover the surface of the barrette you will be attaching it to. (I used a dark pipe cleaner because it disappears, but for a bit of bling, you could use a silver or gold metallic one.) See photo 1.
  2.  Photo 2 shows the correct amount of beads to cover the barrette.
  3. Twist the two ends of the chenille stem.
  4. The beads ready to attach to the barrette. You may either cut off the excess chenille stem or turn it under the beads.
  5. and 6: Either hot glue the beads on the barrette, or sew on with a needle and thread. To sew on, wrap the thread all around the barrette, and through a space between the beads. Be careful to open up the barrette first, so you don’t accidentally sew it closed!

  3. Apply a small strip of glue to one side of the flip flop and place the ribbon directly onto the  middle of the strap. Do this for each side of the flip flops.
  4. Cut your flower stem off and pull plastic piece off bottom of flower top. Apply a large amount of glue to middle of the flip flop strap. This is where your flower top will go.
  5. Immediately place flower onto center of glue and press firmly for about a minute to secure.

Supplies needed

  • 27 Pony beads, red, white and blue
  • One chenille stem (pipe cleaner)
  • One shoelace, or stretch cord

Step by Step Instructions

1. Thread the pony beads onto a chenille stem. (A black stem was used here, but for a  bit of bling, you could use a silver or gold one!)
2. Begin to wind the beads into a coil.  Twist the end of the stem between two beads to hold the coil together.  See the arrow in photo 2.
3. Coil the beads into a tight circle, and wind the end of the stem between two beads of the previous row.  See the arrow in photo 3.
4. Your patriotic amulet is finished, fold a shoelace in half, pass it through the amulet, then pass the ends of the shoelace through the fold, and pull tightly to create a necklace.

Create a headband that mimics bursting fireworks! Use tulle, pipe cleaners, and sparkly decorations in patriotic colors to bring the night sky to life. This accessory is lightweight and adds major flair to any hairstyle.

Supplies needed

  • Headbands- (We used thin headbands)
  • Ribbon- Red, White or Blue (We used Glitter Ribbon)
  • Glue Gun
  • Patriotic Wire Baubles- Found at local Craft Stores
  • Scissors

Step by Step Instructions

1. Gather materials and plan out your firework sculpture!
2. Take your headband and add a dab of hot glue (parents please supervise younger children with the hot glue gun) to the bottom inside of one side of the headband and press your ribbon into glue on headband.
3. Begin to wrap the ribbon tightly around your headband in a spiral formation.
4. Continue wrapping and adding small amounts of glue to secure every couple inches until headband is fully wrapped.
5. Grab your patriotic flare and begin to wrap the wire around the top of the headband where you would like your firework to be located. We chose to put it on the side. The wire part will look unsightly, but don’t worry we will wrap it with ribbon later!
6. Continue adding your wire firework flare until you are happy with what you have created! Once you are satisfied, take the same ribbon, or perhaps a complementing color ribbon, and wrap it around your wire area. Tie a knot to secure, and then tie remainder of ribbon into cute bow.
7. Put your headband on and make your way to the nearest BBQ! Here are two of our firework headbands we made!

7. 4th of July Hat Sparkler

Crafts To Dress Up Your Patriotic Attire 8

Upgrade any sun hat or baseball cap with a sparkler-inspired decoration. Glue pipe cleaners, ribbon, and paper stars around the brim or top of the hat. It adds shade and style all at once—plus, it’s a fun craft for kids to help with.

Supplies needed

  • Red, white, & blue foam sheets
  • Duct tape {your color choice}
  • Holiday garland {we picked it up at the Dollar Tree}
  • Star stickers
  • a pencil
  • duct tape or painter’s tape {your color choice}
  • holiday garland

Step by Step Instructions

1. Cut the garland {or destroy a Dollar Tree centerpiece} to use as decoration for the hat. We used most of the stars for our hats and saved a few along with the other spikey garland to make our sparklers.
2. Cut the foam sheets into 2″ strips {if you are using 9×12 sheets this will give you 6 strips when laid horizontally}.
3. Lay the foam strips out on the counter. We patterned them red/white/blue and used a total of 12 for each of the hats.
4. Use duct tape to hold the strips together. We used two strips of duct tape that would show as a ‘band’ on the outside of the hat and one strip that we folded over the back/inside of the hat.
5. Fringe the tops of the foam strips opposite the duct tape. We made 4 cuts/slits on each foam strip {1/2″ apart} and about 4″ long.
6. Decorate the hat with stars and the holiday garland. We used duct tape on the inside of the hat to hold the garland in place.
7. Fit the hat to your child’s head. Once we knew how big it needed to be, we used another piece of duct tape to seal it.
8. Wear it proudly!
9. Cut garland to use for the sparkler and cut a piece of duct tape slightly longer than the pencil.
10. Lay the pencil on top of the duct tape and press the decorative garland onto the tape.
11. Roll the pencil up in the duct tape to seal it shut.
12. Shake and enjoy!
